Prenatal

The prenatal period can be considered that time of development and growth of a baby prior to birth. During this time, the baby is completely dependent upon the mother for its nutritional needs. This is the most important time of an individual's life as far as nutrition is concerned. This time of rapid growth and development of the baby determines whether or not the developmental potential the child has is met, not only as a baby but also for the rest of his or her life.

During the prenatal period, important organs such as the heart, brain, spinal cord and others are forming. Without the proper levels of vitamins, minerals, and trace minerals, these organs will not develop correctly, and birth defects can occur. One example of this is a condition called spinal bifida, in which the spinal cord does not develop completely before birth. This condition is linked to low levels of vitamins B6, B12 and folic acid in the mother during the prenatal period. Many physicians have realized that it is impossible for the mother to meet the vitamin and mineral needs of her baby and herself through her regular diet. Therefore, the physician recommends a prenatal vitamin in an attempt to meet those needs. However, most of the prenatal vitamins that are prescribed fall short in the form and amount of many minerals and vitamins that are needed.

Not only can nutritional deficiencies affect the baby, but they can also have negative effects on the mother as well. During development, the baby is pulling on all the mother's sources of vitamins and minerals in order to meet its own needs. This stress can lead to conditions that range from low energy levels to gestational diabetes or pregnancy toxemia. By supplementing a high quality, broad spectrum vitamin, mineral, and trace mineral supplement women may be able to avoid many of the problems associated with the prenatal period and recover smoothly from the pregnancy while nursing the new baby.

The prenatal period is the most important period of time for the physical development of a human being. Many of the problems seen today during the prenatal period can be avoided, both for the mother and the baby. Supplementation is necessary due to the inadequate amounts of mineral and vitamins in our modern food supply. Even by eating a "perfect" diet, which is almost impossible for the average American woman to do, several nutrients would not be present in high enough quantities to avoid these problems. While either the Complete Formula for Young Women™ or the New Mother's Blend™ by itself would be a better nutritional supplement than any "prenatal vitamin" on the market, the optimum supplementation program is a combination of both of these products.
